Tueth Keeney Presents Annual Association of Corporate Counsel CLE Program

ACC CLETueth Keeney partnered with the Association of Corporate Counsel ““ St. Louis on November 22, 2019 for its annual CLE luncheon. This year’s presentation was titled: “What’s New and on the Horizon in Employment Law.” The presentation was well attended and covered a variety of topics in employment law. Margaret Hesse and Jim Layton presented on recent Missouri Supreme Court arguments on the Missouri Human Rights Act and Missouri law on gender stereotyping and retaliation claims. Melanie Gurley Keeney and Jenna Lakamp presented on the employment implications of medical and recreational marijuana laws. Mandi Moutray and Veronica Potter presented on e-discovery and litigation holds. Melanie Gurley Keeney, Diana Metzger, and Kristine Nazir provided an update on immigration laws.

Margaret A. Hesse is a shareholder with the law firm of Tueth Keeney.   She primarily  practices in the areas of education law, employment law, and litigation and has represented school districts across both Missouri and Illinois for many years.  Margaret’s experience in includes defending school districts in matters involving the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Missouri Human Rights Act, Title VII, the Safe Schools Act, Title IX, the Equal Pay Act, Section 1983, First Amendment and Sunshine Act compliance, to name a few.   She consults with educators on a daily basis on a variety of issues.   Margaret is committed to creating a world where school leaders are spending as little time as possible thinking about legal concerns, so they can maximize their time and attention shaping young lives.

Melanie Gurley Keeney practices in the areas of employment, immigration and education law. Melanie has been included in Best Lawyers in America ® for 25 years, and has been recognized in all areas of her practice. She also has been named to Missouri & Kansas Super Lawyers ® lists for over 10 years, and has been rated one of the top 50 female lawyers in Missouri and Kansas. She was named a “Top Missouri Lawyer” by St. Louis Magazine and Kansas City Magazine for Immigration Law. Melanie has been distinguished as Best Lawyers ®  St. Louis Immigration Law Lawyer of the Year in 2019, 2015, and 2012, and St. Louis Education Law Lawyer of the year in 2017. In 2016, Missouri Lawyers Weekly presented Melanie with the Women’s Justice Litigation Practitioner Award and in 2014, Washington University School of Law honored Melanie with the International Women’s Day Award for Employment Law. She has served as an adjunct professor at Washington University and is a frequent presenter on legal topics. Melanie is a founding Shareholder of the Firm and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Firm.

Jenna M. Lakamp practices primarily in the areas of labor & employment, litigation, and education law, representing both private and public institutions in education and employment matters. Jenna is licensed in Missouri and Illinois and regularly litigates in both jurisdictions. Prior to joining the firm, Jenna practiced civil litigation at a large defense firm in St. Louis where she gained experience in discovery, motion practice, and client interaction. Jenna attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis, where she was active in The National Moot Court Team. Jenna also clerked with a successful litigation firm during law school.

James Layton leads the firm’s Appellate practice group and is a member of the firm’s Commercial Litigation, Labor, and Education groups. He assists clients with analysis and presentation of complex legal issues in Missouri and federal courts, both trial and appellate. In addition to handling cases himself and with other attorneys at Tueth Keeney, Jim consults with clients on appellate strategy and assists other counsel in high-stakes, complex appeals.

Diane Metzger practices in the areas of immigration law and employment law.   From large multi-national employers to small employers who have no prior experience with our nations”™ complex immigration laws, Ms. Metzger represents and provides counsel to clients with a wide range of business immigration needs, including but not limited to obtaining non-immigrant visas (e.g. H-1B, L-1, TN, E, O); applying for permanent residency (e.g., PERM, Schedule A, EB-1); navigating the naturalization process; consular processing and other applications made directly with the U.S. Department of State; out-bound immigration matters when U.S. employees are transferred abroad; and family-based immigration through U.S. citizen relatives.

Mandi D. Moutray practices primarily in the areas of education, higher education, litigation, and labor and employment law. She represents school districts and higher education institutions throughout Missouri with respect to employment and termination matters, student rights, harassment and discrimination disputes, and civil rights. Prior to joining the firm, Mandi practiced civil litigation at a large litigation firm in Saint Louis. While in law school, Mandi served as a judicial intern to the Honorable Roy L. Richter for the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District.

Veronica E. Potter practices primarily in the areas of higher education, litigation, and labor and employment law. Veronica represents colleges, universities, and private employers in education and employment litigation matters. Veronica started her legal career as a prosecutor, where she gained experience in all stages of litigation, including case investigation, discovery, arguing pre-trial motions, and presenting cases to both judges and juries. Prior to joining the firm, Veronica also practiced civil litigation at a large defense firm in St. Louis.
